Test Drive 2018 KIA Forte Southfield MI
With the 2018 model year, the KIA Forte approaches the end of its second generation of production. Already popular with the buying public and automotive writers for its blend of functionality and fun personality, the Forte, which is designed as a compact four-door sedan, is available as an LX, S, and EX model.
2018 KIA Forte’s Exterior
Standard exterior features on the 2018 KIA Forte include projector beam headlights and heated side mirrors. On the S and EX, the headlights can automatically switch on or off depending on the amount of light outside. Also added on the S and EX are stylish LED positioning lights and a chrome-tipped exhaust. The S stands out with its trunk lip spoiler to improve aerodynamics. The EX has several exterior exclusives, such as LED turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors, front fog lights, chrome window molding, a hands-free smart trunk, and LED rear combination lamps and an LED center high mounted stop light. While the LX gets 15-inch steel wheels, the S gets 16-inch alloy wheels and the EX gets 17-inch ones.
2018 KIA Forte’s Interior
A five-seater, the 2018 Forte provides a total interior volume of up to 96.2 cubic feet. Standard cargo space is measured at 14.9 cubic feet, and you can fold down the rear bench-style seat to expand such space into the cabin. The LX model has woven cloth seat trim. Upgrading to the S trim replaces the woven cloth with black sport cloth upholstery in line with its racing-inspired positioning. Only the EX gets leather seat trim and front-seat heating capability due to its emphasis on luxury and comfort. Standard comfort and convenience features include cruise control, four-speaker audio, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, a single-disc CD player with MP3 playback capability, and SiriusXM® satellite radio service.
The S and EX get additional Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone-based control, two dash-mounted tweeter speakers, a 3.5-inch TFT LCD meter display, and UVO infotainment integration backed by a 7-inch touchscreen. Exclusive to the EX is dual-zone automatic climate control. Optional on the S and EX are a 4.2-inch TFT color LCD display in place of the 3.5-inch. You can add an auto-dimming rearview mirror on the top-level EX for dimming the glare of headlights behind you.
2018 KIA Forte’s Mechanical/Powertrain
The 2018 KIA Forte gets a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that produces 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque on the EX and 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque on the others. The LX engine is hitched to a 6-speed manual transmission, with the option of getting a 6-speed automatic one instead. The 6-speed automatic gearbox is standard on the S and EX, which also get a Drive Mode Select system for altering driving feel. The 2018 Forte has a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension for absorbing the turbulence of less-than-smooth driving surfaces. The suspension is sport-tuned on the S trim for a tighter, firmer feel. The motor-driven power steering on the Forte provides a turning diameter of 34.8 feet.
2018 KIA Forte’s Safety
For restraint and cushioning in the event of a collision, the 2018 Forte has dual front impact airbags, a pair of front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and dual side curtain airbags that are mounted on the roof and flank both rows of seats. Also standard on the small car are four-wheel disc brakes to shorten stopping distances, anti-lock braking to prevent wheel lockup during abrupt stops, electronic vehicle stability control to keep you on the intended driving path, hill start assist control for safe driving up a steep slope, traction control to maximize tire grip on the road, electronic brake-force distribution to properly allocate stopping power to the wheels, and brake assist for additional stopping power when necessary. On the S and EX, KIA adds a rearview camera for monitoring what’s and who’s behind you when you shift to and drive in reverse. Exclusive to the EX are blind spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, which are advanced safety features that are either optional or unavailable on other trims. On the S or EX, you can add other advanced safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and lane keep assist.
