Southfield MI – 2018 KIA Niro’s Safety
KIA is one of the latest automakers to venture into the hybrid market, debuting the KIA NIRO for the 2017 model year. For 2018, KIA continues to refine the vehicle with several additions and enhancements. This model year is split into four trim levels: FE, LX, EX, and Touring.
2018 KIA Niro’s EXTERIOR
The new hybrid uses a high-strength steel and aluminum construction, which aids in its great gas mileage by being lightweight. Standard exterior features include power side mirrors, a rear spoiler, gloss-black chrome-trimmed radiator grille, black fender and rocker rail cladding, and projector beam headlights that can automatically turn on or off in response to the amount of light outside. For outdoor cargo-carrying capacity, KIA adds roof rails on the LX. You’d need to go up to the EX to also add fog lights for more penetrating illumination, LED daytime running lights for increased visibility to other motorists, LED rear combination lamps, and LED turn-signal indicators, heating ability, and power folding on the side mirrors. Exclusive to the Touring are High-Intensity Discharge headlights (instead of the standard projector halogen ones). While the Touring rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, the other trims use 16-inch alloy ones.
2018 KIA Niro’s INTERIOR
Classified as a subcompact four-door vehicle, the 2018 NIRO provides two rows of seats for up to five occupants. Passenger volume is measured at 100.9 cubic feet, and standard cargo space is rated at 19.4 cubic feet. Cargo space, however, can be increased to 54.5 cubic feet by folding down the rear-seat row. Standard on the vehicle are cloth seat trim and a 4-way adjustable driver’s seat. On the EX, the hybrid is upgraded with cloth-and-leather upholstery and front-seat heating capability. Exclusive to the Touring are steering-wheel heating capability, leather seat trim, 10-way adjustability and 2-way power lumbar support on the driver’s seat, and a driver’s seat integrated memory system.
For comfort and convenience, the car starts off with features such as six-speaker audio, cruise control, remote keyless control, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, dual-zone automatic climate control, SiriusXM® satellite radio service, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone-based control, a high-resolution 4.2-inch TFT LCD display for vital vehicle information, and UVO infotainment integration with a 7-inch touchscreen display. The LX trim and higher get an additional push-button engine start. To get an auto-dimming rearview mirror, go up to the EX trim. Exclusive to the Touring are HD Radio™, eight-speaker Harman/Kardon® audio, an 8-inch touchscreen navigation with a complimentary SiriusXM® Traffic subscription, and wireless device charging ability.
2018 KIA Niro’s Mechanical/Powertrain
For power, this hybrid-which uses a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout-relies on the combination of a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, an electric motor with a lithium-ion polymer battery, and a 6-speed rotary-shifted dual-clutch transmission. The resulting powertrain yields a combined output of 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. For absorbing bumps and other types of road imperfections, the vehicle uses a MacPherson strut front suspension and an independent multi-link rear suspension, with a stabilizer bar on each end. With its motor-driven power steering, the hybrid ride has a turning diameter of 17.5 cubic feet.
2018 KIA Niro’s SAFETY
For restraint and cushioning in the event of a collision, this hybrid has a driver’s side knee airbag, a pair of front impact airbags, a pair of front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and a pair of roof-mounted side curtain airbags that flank both rows. Other standard safety features on the car include electronic stability control to prevent deviating from the intended driving path, four-wheel disc brakes for optimal stopping ability, anti-lock braking for preventing wheel lockup, brake assist for additional stopping force when needed, electronic brake-force distribution for proper allocation of stopping force to the wheels, a rearview camera to monitor reverse driving, traction control to combat skidding, hill start assist control to prevent rollback on a hill when shifting from park to drive, and keyless entry as the vehicle’s anti-theft mechanism. On the LX and higher, KIA replaces the keyless entry with a smart key system, and it adds engine immobilization; this is meant to bolster the subcompact car’s protection against unauthorized access and operation. For blind spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, upgrade to at least the EX trim. Exclusive to the Touring are smart cruise control, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, and a front and rear parking assist system.
